May 2025 Newsletter

Hello everyone,  Thank you to everyone who provided feedback for our strategic planning process. Watch this space for the first draft coming soon!

We’re very excited that the new shed is up and nearly finished! Join us for a meeting on Saturday 24 May at 9:00am to discuss storage options — including rack materials and which boats will be stored there initially.

Good luck to all members competing in the Wetlands Wonder on Sunday 25 May. This will be a special milestone for several of our junior paddlers competing in their very first kayak race!

We also have members heading to the 15th Anniversary Barron River Challenge, taking place 24–25 May. Paddle hard and stay safe!

Juniors – please speak with your coaches about participating in the Varsity Lakes Junior Sprint Races on 3 June.

Don’t forget the Paddle Queensland Schools Marathon on 17 June. We’ll be organising boats and trailers, so be sure to let your coaches know if you’re attending.

As we prepare for the upcoming races, we’ve been checking our team boats. Unfortunately, some K2s are missing seats and footplates. Additionally, a club TK2 (green deck, white hull) is currently unaccounted for. If you have borrowed this craft and forgotten to return it, please do so as soon as possible.  Likewise if you have used club footplates and seats, please return them.

We’re proud to welcome Heidi Smith back from the Asia Pacific Cup in Japan. Heidi placed 4th in both the K2 and K4, and 7th in the mixed K2 — a fantastic result for her first international competition. Well done, Heidi!

Meanwhile, Byron Dieckmann continues his intense training for the Junior & U23 World Championships in Portugal. Best of luck, Byron — we’re all behind you!

Dedication, persistence, and consistency — these are the qualities that help our athletes reach the podium again and again.

Despite the rainy weather, our Women on the Water group is still paddling every Monday at 8:00am. If you or someone you know would like to join this relaxed outdoor activity, please contact Delia on 0498 63 2265.

As we move into the darker winter mornings, please use lights when training at 5:30am. Always paddle with a buddy. There’s currently a lot of debris in the river — some just below the surface — which can increase the risk of capsizing, especially in low light.
