May 2021 Newsletter

Hello everyone, All training on 1 May was cancelled due to the weather and only two paddlers turned up for the time trial the next day.  Well done Jake and Chris.

Despite the weather, the usual suspects for the time trail were at the Gregory River Canoe Race. The Gregory River runs through Lawn Hill National Park in north-west Queensland. Nicky Donaldson, Steve Maclay, Ray Robinson, John Smallwood, Paul Wood and John Lakeland travelled approximately 2,200km for the event. Congratulations to John Lakeland who was first and was backing-up after winning SLS Australian Championships 35+ Ski race two weeks prior.

The venue for the Australian Sprint Championships has been changed to West Lakes in Adelaide due to an outbreak of blue-green algae at Penrith, Sydney after the recent flooding. The QAS squad based at SCPC and the following club members are competing in the championships:Pierrick Cartier, Catalina Stylianou, Luka Stylianou, Jada Baker, Sienna Baker, Neiva Wright, Joe Wills and Jason Keating

Additionally, our two Olympians Ally Bull and Alyce Wood will be off to Tokyo COVID permitting.

You’ve trained hard and hung there through thick and thin. Good luck.

While they are away, Norm and Maureen Jackson have agreed to re-scarify the club floor ie make it not slippery. More details on this closer to the time, however, there will be limited access to the club for a 24hr period.

The first race of the Pacific Coast Series will be held at Currumbin Creek on 16 May. Good luck to all those participating.

Congratulations to Matt Remke-Meyer and his wife Julie on the birth of their second child who arrived on Tuesday 27 April.

Last year the club was awarded a $2,000 grant from Sunshine Coast Council for operational and maintenance costs. Beyond membership, we usually raise funds through races such as the Petrie Pursuit and the Maroochy River Paddle. However, these were not held due to COVID.  The grant money contributed to registration of the trailers and dinghy; water costs and insurances.

The club recently passed it’s statutory requirements with Council for fire, water, electricial and other safety items.

The Maroochy River Paddle is scheduled for 22 August this year.  This 17km paddle with the outgoing tide from Dunethin Rock ends at our club house.  Save the date.

Attached is a photo of the little carpet snake that fell from the roller door when I opened it last week. Thanks to Lach for putting it over in the scrub.
