Sunshine Coast Paddlesports Club Update 1 December 2023

Stay Safe in the Heat

Hello everyone, I hope you are all managing to stay cool in these heat wave conditions. Paddling with the wind on your face is nice but when the breeze is behind you, it can become very hot. Please take care to not over do it in these conditions.  Small and frequent sips of water are best to keep you hydrated.

Club Security

I regret to inform you about an attempted break sometime between 17:00 Wednesday 29 November and 05:30 on Thursday 30 November.   Previous security incidents have been when the fence wire was cut and a fuel tank stolen from one of the dinghies.   This time the chain holding the padlock on the back fence was cut and left in a position to give the impression that nothing had happened. It is possible that the thieves intended to return when paddlers were on the water with a view to stealing car keys, phones etc Please remain vigilant and ensure all doors and gates are securely locked, especially when you’re out on the water. Let’s work together to protect our club and its members.

Member Achievements

On a brighter note, I want to congratulate Matt Ramkey-Meyer and Pierrick Cartier for their placings in the Paddle Queensland Pacific Coast Ocean Racing Series.  We were also proud of Electra Outram for her recent acknowledgements for her contributions to the surf life saving clubs in the Noosa area.  This weekend, Bryon Dieckermann and other club members will be competing at Alexandra Headlands. Show your support them if you can!

Y42032

Last weekend the club hosted the Y42032 Time Trials. This group of athletes have been selected by Queensland Academy of Sport and under the auspice of Sharlene Kelly.  Participants from the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast have completed three months of training and this was their assessment for continuing to the next 12 month phase. Well done everyone and great to see Hayden Mo0esley, Bodhi Emery and Jack Whitfort making themselves available for the Q&A session after refreshments. Thank you to volunteers (including parents) who made this event run smoothly.

Upcoming Events

On Saturday 9 December there are two major events at the club:

  1. The Queensland State Team training camp No 2 will be held on Saturday from 7:30am to 10:30am.  .Soctt Sharples, Executive Officer Paddle Queensland will be there to talk with parents and Jason Keating, State Coach, will be putting the paddlers through their paces in various assessments and team boats.
  2. The club Christmas party will be held in the evening. If you haven’t RSVP’d yet, please do so. Check your previous invite for details, and don’t hesitate to ask if you need another copy.

December time trial

The December TT will be on this Sunday 2 December.  If you’re participating in the 10km course, be there at 6:30 am for a 6:45 am start. Staggered starts for the 7.5km course will commence at 7 am, so please arrive at 6:45 am.

Closing Note: Here are a couple of stories from Peter Petho, a former Hungarian Olympian and AIS coach who was based at SCPC. One is about one of our Olympic paddlers who began their journey at our club, like the Y42032 participants, but from around 2008. Take a moment to read and be inspired! Peter is still paddling on Eudlo Creek in a red K1 – say hello sometime.

“Eudlo creek is a conservation park area on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland – a beautiful, quiet place, home of birds, frogs and fishes.

Some fifteen years ago a new, rare creature moved in from nearby Twin Waters. It was a tall, lanky, two legged, two armed noisy being, who resembled  a stick. The noise she made – yes, she was a she because she had a female name – was of that happy type, which would have made my days happy completely, if I could only turn the volume down a bit sometimes.

She loved the water – I think she was a sea creature from an early age – and maybe that is why she spent quite a lot of time in it at the beginning. No matter how much I encouraged her to stay safe in a boat – there are some bull sharks around the place some times – being tall and inpatient, you end up, falling in…and me rescuing…a lot.

Anyway…I saw a photo recently on Facebook, she is a stunning young lady, a wife and mother now and would beat the 20 year old myself on the 500m by three seconds…and I was in the Hungarian National Team at that time.
I don’t know how this can happen…but I am happy that I had some input in that swan like change and very happy for Alyce Wood. She is the first single sprint kayaking world champion from Australia. Well done woman…and I guess there is more to come in 2024!

**************************************

When you are a female paddler from countries other than Hungary, at the time of getting ready to race them,  in a psychological way you accept that you cannot beat a Hungarian one.

German ladies are different in this…they are the other ones who our Australian girls don’t think can be beaten…it is because they think that those girls and women are made from some different material.
Let me tell you that it is not so. If one knows, I am the one. I had been brave enough to marry three of those scary angels (two of them were angels of doom for me) in the past 53 years…and still here to tell the tale.
They are women like you, darling Aussie ones. Just as bossy, strong, smart as you are, so no reason to accept them as superior to you. Alyce Wood learned it from me – the one who coached, dated, married some of those – and from mother in law and super coach Anna Wood, who came from the same part of the world…and beat all of the girls in her prime.
Just believe in and trust yourself …after all you are a woman.”

Remember to look out for one another and stay safe. Your well-being is our priority.
