Important Safety Message & May 2023 Newsletter

We want to send an important safety message to all of our members in light of an incident that occurred at the club this week. On Wednesday afternoon, one of our committee members was involved in an altercation with a tent dweller about power access for charging mobile phones. The discussion was uncomfortable and aggressive, and it serves as a reminder to us all about the importance of staying vigilant and aware of our surroundings.

We ask that you exercise caution and be mindful of your safety when at the club, particularly during early morning or late afternoon hours. It is best to be there with someone else for your own protection (safety in numbers). If you or another club member are using the shower, ask another member to remain at the club so you are not surprised by someone else in the shed when you exit the shower or changing room.

Please also be on the lookout for syringes, as more have been found. We strongly advise wearing footwear in and around the fence perimeter and in the car adjacent park. The protection of our junior paddlers is paramount, and we remind you not to leave juniors unattended and alone at the club at any time, without a senior member being present.

If you ever feel in danger or uncertain about a situation, don’t hesitate to call “000”. Additionally, incidents can be reported on Police Link. We urge you to report all incidents no matter how slight to the police and a committee member.

We take safety very seriously and will be informing the Queensland Police Service and council of this matter. Let’s work together to keep our club safe and secure for everyone.

Another safety matter relates to on water safety. When paddling in the dark, winter mornings or afternoons, please ensure you are visible to other waterway users. This means a working light front and back of your body or craft. Bike lights are ideal for this purpose and the cost is minimal.

Ergo Fixed

We would like to give a big shout-out to Joe Ballantyne for replacing the broken ergo rope. We’re happy to see that the ergo is being put to good use by members for stroke correction, 200m sprints, and more. We’d also like to remind members that the ergo was funded through a grant from the Australian Government Business and Industry.

Maroochy River Paddle

We’re pleased to announce that our grant application to the Sunshine Coast Council for funding our signature event on 27 August has been partially successful. The council has agreed to fund $1,200 towards the cost of running this event. We’re looking forward to seeing you all there!

Membership Renewal

As a reminder, membership is due for renewal as of 1 July. While club fees and Paddle Queensland fees are not increasing, you may have received an email from Paddle Australia regarding their fee increase. Please log into the Go Membership system next month to renew your membership and pay your boat storage.
