March 2023 Newsletter

Dear Paddle Club Members,

We hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying your time on the water. Here are some updates and news from our club.

Please remember to send any items you would like to be shared on our Facebook page to Matt. We want to keep our page active and engaging for all members, so please send in your photos, videos, and stories!

Congratulations to all paddlers who competed at GP2 in Sydney, and best wishes to those who will be competing at marathon nationals in Geelong and sprint nationals in Perth. We are proud of your hard work and dedication.

We had a great turnout at our Zero Party on 18 February to celebrate members who have a zero birthday this year. With around 30 people in attendance, we enjoyed an afternoon of fun and celebration. A special shout out to Fred O’Neill who turned 90 in January! Please see the attached photo for a representation from 90 to 50.

We would like to recognize one of our club members, Annette Dawson, for her amazing support and involvement in the paddling community. Annette traveled to New Zealand to support Richard Barnes after his epic crossing of the ditch in the “Blue Moon.” Additionally, Annette was successful in obtaining grant funding for the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic. Thank you, Annette, for your dedication and hard work.

We are currently conducting a key audit of the club house. If you have a club house key, please send an email to Sunshinecoastpaddlesportsclub@gmail.com  with your name and club house key number.  This audit is important to ensure that we have an accurate record of all keys and to maintain the security of our club house. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

In addition to the first Sunday of the month time trial, we have instigated a mini time trial for U12 and Learn to Paddle members.  The first one was held on Saturday 4 March and the results are listed below as are the regular time trail results.  The number for attendees on Sunday was reduced as several members competed in the first race in this year’s Pacific Coast Series – War on Lake Orr at Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast.

The mini time trial was a 2km course in Eudlo Creek. The conditions were rough with a high tide and strong southerly. Thanks to all who helped out.  Some participants then tried paddling in different boats and doubles craft.

Emma Nixon       14:50

Zsombor Budai  15:02

Liam McLaughlin       15:58

Christine Petersen     18:26

Bianca McLaughlin     20:08

The 7.5km course on Sunday had similar conditions but with more motorised boat traffic. Steve McLay paddled but did not race.

Bryn Davis & Geoff Pearce     36:31 (amazing!)

Lachlan Kent      40.03

We are asking club members to seek sponsorship from your community connections.  If you think you could help in this regard, please contact the committee for a formal letter that can be drafted to your specific contacts.  We can offer on fence advertising, promotion on our face book page and website and in this newsletter.

Thank you all for your continued support and involvement in our club. We look forward to seeing you on the water soon!

Kind  regards, Delia, Doug, Paul, Tim, Lach, Matt and Jason
