March 2022 Newsletter

Hello Everyone, I hope you’re staying safe in all this wet weather.

Floods

For the first time ever, the committee had to enact our flood plan on 28 February.  The final water level was to our western fence.  Luckily it subsided with the tide and the threat diminished.

Races

Racing paddlers have been on a roller coaster with preparing for the Queensland sprint titles on 4 & 5 February only to have them reschuled to 5 & 6 March.  However, racing on this weekend was also cancelled due to weather.   Additionally, the Queensland marathon championships scheduled for 12 & 13 March were put on hold.  Thanks to Jason, Todd, Kara, Deb, Sheryn, Annette and Delia some sprint races were held at Lake Kawana on 6 March 2022.   Additionally, with an idea from Matt, we held a 10km time trial.  This has allowed paddlers to burn off some steam in a competitive but friendly way over both sprint and distance races.  Timings from the sprints have been critical for talent identified paddlers based at our club. Finish line photo attached.

The Tingalpa Trot, long known as a fun course winding from Thornside to Capalaba and often the first club of the year, has also been postponed due to poor water quality as a result of the floods.

Grants

The grant application for the building extension closes on 31 March.   Another grant application has been submitted to the Department of Sport and Recreation.

Sunshine Coast 2032 Taskforce Forum

I attended a meeting at University of Sunshine Coast on 2 March about the taskforce for the 2032 Olympics.  The taskforce has been initiated by Ted O’Brien, MP, but is community driven and owned.  It’s role will be as a clearing house (feedback), interlocutor (information sharing), collaborator (work with government departments to provide community input), organiser (an army of volunteers).  It is about how the Sunshine Coast can maximise opportunities before, during and after the 2032 Olympics.
