2020 Qld State Sprint Championships

On Saturday 11 January 2020, paddlers from our club competed in the Queensland State Sprint Championships.

The event was held at Wyaralong Dam, west of Beaudesert.  There has only been a slight amount of rain in this area, so the ground cover is sparse and there is limited tree cover at the rowing course.  The day was dry and hot which made it difficult for competitors and spectators to keep hydrated.

Alyce Wood (nee Burnett), Ally Bull, Josie Pike, John Lakeland and Xavien Maclean took part in various races of 1000m, 500m and 200m distances.

Our two Olympians, Ally and Alyce scratched from the open FK1 1000m but Alyce was first in the open FK1 500m and open FK1 200m.  Alyce also kindly encouraged the junior paddlers while their nervously waited on the start line.

Josie was first in U35 FK1 1000m, 500m and 200m.

John was first in the open MK1 200m, and although did not have a podium finish, performed well in the open MK1 1000m and 500m.

Xavien was second in both his races – the MJD U12 500m and 200m (junior development division). Below is a photo of Xavien and his proud mum Janis.
